Identification of off-flavor compounds in high-density polyethylene (HDPE) with different amounts of abscents
1998
The use of synthetic pipes for drinking water distribution has increased. High desnity polyethylene (HPDE) is preferred because of its favorable mechanical properties, ease of handling during manufacturing, and low permeability to external contaminants. Off-flavor drinking water is a problem with plastic pipes. The compounds causing off-flavors are mainly carbonyl compounds. A combined zeolite called Abscents is used to eliminate odors and to remove odor-causing compounds. In this study, four different amounts of Abscents were added to raw HDPE pellets, and the influence on the off-flavor properties were analyzed. When the maximum amount of Abscents was added, almost all the carbonyl compou…
A comprehensive experimental study of the rheological behaviour of HDPE.
1986
Extensional properties of four high density polyethylenes with different molecular weights and molecular weight distributions are presented. The samples have already been well characterized in shear and non-isothermal extensional flow. The data were collected at 180 °C for elongational rates between 3 · 10−1 and 10−4s−1. Some qualitative and quantitative generalizations of the results are given.
Using organoclay to promote morphology refinement and co-continuity in high-density polyethylene/polyamide 6 blends – Effect of filler content and po…
2010
We investigate the gradual changes of the microstructure of two blends of high-density polyethylene (HOPE) and polyamide 6 (PA6) at opposite composition filled with increasing amounts of an organo-modified clay. The filler locates preferentially inside the polyamide phase, bringing about radical alterations in the micron-scale arrangement of the polymer phases. When the host polyamide represents the major constituent, a sudden reduction of the average sizes of the polyethylene droplets was observed upon addition of even low amounts of organoclay. A morphology refinement was also noticed at low filler contents when the particles distributes inside the minor phase. In this case, however, keep…
Properties of radiation-modified blends of polyethylene with elastomers and liquid crystalline copolyester
2001
The results are given on the effect of γ-irradiation on properties of blends of high and low-density polyethylene (HDPE, LDPE) with elastomers -ethylene/propylene/diene rubber (EPDM) and chlorinated polyethylene (CPE), and thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer (LCP). The morphological, thermal, mechanical properties (including thermosetting properties) and adhesion properties of blended composites were investigated. A special attention was paid to the applicability of the blends as thermosetting materials (TSM). The LCP used was a copolyester of poly(ethylene terephthalate) with p-(hydroxybenzoic acid) in the ratio 40: 60. It was found that addition of LCP essentially influenced the therm…
Recycling of plastics from packaging
1997
Plastic waste coming from the separate collection of packaging film was recycled and characterized. The material is a blend of low density and linear low density polyethylene and after recycling shows mechanical and rheological properties depending on the processing conditions and apparatus. High processing temperature and high residence times strongly enhance the degradation processes and reduce the mechanical properties, in particular the elongation at break. A possible use of this recycled plastic is for the production of low pressure pipes but the properties are lower than those of virgin pipe grade polyethylene. By introducing additives, like antioxidants, inert fillers and impact modi…
Experimental Investigation for Local Tank Inflow Model
2014
In the present paper the effect of private roof tanks and of the float valve characteristics on apparent losses due to water meter errors was investigated via an experimental study. The tests were carried out at the Environmental Hydraulic Laboratory of the University of Enna (Italy), on a high-density polyethylene (HDPE 100 PN16) looped distribution network. The experimental results showed that network pressure plays an important role in the characterisation of the floating ball valve emitter law, but the tank operating condition is the most relevant aspect to be considered mainly for water meter error evaluation. The rheological behaviour of HDPE/LDPE blends. II. Die swell and normal stresses
1984
Die swell data are presented for different high-density/low-density polyethylene blends. The data relating to samples with frozen-in stresses are represented, collected as a function of the usual operational parameters (L/D ratio, flow rate, temperature). Data obtained with annealed samples are used to derive, through a theoretical approach, normal stresses. An getemperten Proben gemessene Wert…
The rheological behaviour of HDPE/LDPE blends
1983
The rheological behaviour of three types of HDPE/LDPE blends at several compositions (various weight percentages of LDPE) has been studied with the aid of a capillary rheometer and three different capillaries.
1997
Polyethylene wastes (low-density polyethylene, high-density polyethylene and their binary blends) were subjected to high-energy radiation, using a 60Co gamma radiation source. The crosslinked materials thus obtained were processed to heatshrinkable films. Tensile strength could be sharply improved by increasing the dose up to 20 Mrad, simultaneously increasing the elongation at break of the most degraded PE waste. An increase of the degree of compatibility of LDPE and HDPE waste was also observed. All samples examined exhibit a “memory effect” after drawing at 130°C and cooling under tension followed by further heating under relaxed conditions. The value of shrinkage depended on the degree …
Effect of nano zinc oxide as UV stabilizer on the weathering performance of wood-polyethylene composite
2016
Abstract In this study, the effect of using nano-sized zinc oxide (ZnO) particles on the enhancement if the degradation resistance of wood-high density polyethylene (HDPE) composite was investigated through artificial weathering. Samples with different amounts of ZnO mixing ratio (0, 1, 2, and 4 wt%) were manufactured using an internal mixer followed by compression molding. The prepared samples were then exposed to the artificial weathering process in a QUV weatherometer. The weathering behavior of samples was characterized using tensile strength, contact angle analysis, colorimetry, ATR-FTIR spectroscopy and FE-SEM. The results indicated that the amount of surfaces crack, tensile strength …
